The Island receives the Duke of York Award

I am thrilled to announce that my client The Island has been awarded with Prince Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award.

The Island which provides mentoring services for children struggling with their mental, emotional and social wellbeing has won royal recognition due to their high-success rates of transforming the lives of vulnerable children living in York.

Founded by Bob Purrington who works at the City of York Council as a Social Worker and as a Trustee at The Island, he set up the charity in 2008 to offer support for children in serious need, including those struggling in the school environment, witnessing or experiencing domestic violence, being overwhelmed with mental ill-health plus more.

Bob says “The Island being a York based children’s charity, we are all delighted to have received this award. I am proud of what The Island has achieved, and we are truly grateful to our incredible volunteers who give up their time to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable children in the local area.

The Island provides several vital mentoring services for isolated children living in the city, including one to one mentoring, group-based work, youth clubs and school-based mentoring which will be taking place at Tang Hall Primary School and Archbishop of Holgate Secondary School in the next academic year.

Nigel Poulton, Mentoring Services Manager at The Island says “The Island believes in care, responsibility, respect and compassion resulting in positive outcomes on children and young people’s attitude, behaviour and skills. We are proud to have received this prestigious award once again for continuing to offer high-quality mentoring services for local children struggling with their mental, emotional and/or social wellbeing and we look forward to developing our services further to help even more children in need.”

The Island’s award received a full page spread in the York Press which was seen by over 80,000 people both online and offline*. Their article was written by the Little Seed Group and can be read online here.
