Mailchimp Email Template Image Sizes

Using Mailchimp as part of your email marketing strategy allows you to build and nurture existing and new relationships. This is why using the right image sizes for MailChimp is crucial.

As the only Approved and Certified Mailchimp Partner in North Yorkshire; one of the common questions we are asked about Mailchimp marketing is “what size should my images be for Mailchimp newsletters?”.

Incorrectly sized imagery can result in your newsletters becoming skewed once they are sent out. In short, incorrectly sized images don’t look professional!

Read below to find out what image sizes you should be using in your Mailchimp email templates.

How wide should my Mailchimp images be

It’s worth noting that the width of all of Mailchimp’s templates is 600px in size. This means you shouldn’t allow any of your visuals to exceed this width.

Although your email template will look correct in the preview setting, you cannot control how the email servers, such as  Gmail or Outlook, will display the content once you have sent out your mailings. So, it is important to adhere to the width sizes to maintain the credibility of the brand.

How large should my Mailchimp images be?

The width of each image will vary according to how many images you have on one row, however, as a rule of thumb, you should aim to have your visual widths 6-15% less than 600px to ensure your mailings lay correctly in your receiver’s inbox:

  • One full-width image should not be any wider than 600px in size. However, we’d recommend keeping the image width to 564px (max)
  • Two images should not be any wider than 300px each in size. However, we’d recommend keeping each image width to 264px (max)
  • Three images should not be any wider than 200px each in size. However, we’d recommend keeping each image width to 164 (max)

Image Cards, Text and Group Blocks

To add further confusion, image sizes are also dependant on the type of content block you are using within your Mailchimp email template.

Image Cards

The image card content block inserts a single image with a caption against a solid-colored background, which you can customise to fit your brand.

  • If you are using margins set edge to edge (set the content block settings) then we’d recommend that the image should not be any wider than 564px
  • If your margins are not set edge to edge (see the content block settings) then we’d recommend that the image should not be any wider than 528px

Image + Text

The Image + Text content block has the option to add up to two images to your email and up to four images in a landing page or website. The ideal width of your images in this content block depends on how much of your body text the image is aligned with. If you align your image (left or right) with:

  • 1/3 of text, then we’d recommend that the image width not be any wider than 352px
  • half of the text, then we’d recommend that the image width not be any wider than 264px
  • two-thirds of the text, then we’d recommend that the image width not be any wider than 176px
  • three-quarters of the text, then we’d recommend that the image width not be any wider than 132px

Image Blocks

An image block allows an image to fill a whole portion of your email template, separate from any text.

  • One full-width image should not be any wider than 600px in size, however, we’d recommend keeping the image width to 564px (max)
  • Two images should not be any wider than 300px each in size, however, we’d recommend keeping each image width to 264px (max)
