On Sunday 4 August, our Marketing, PR and Social Media Director, Ellen Cole will be attempting to run the York 10k to raise funds for local children’s charity, The Island.
What is The Island charity?
The Island is a long-term client of the Little Seed Group, where we support them with their social media and email marketing campaigns.
Based in York, The Island provides mentoring programmes for local children and young people experiencing challenges with their mental, emotional and social wellbeing. Through regular recreational activities, The Island’s programmes build relationships between the mentee and their mentor through the art of play so that they can help develop the child or young person’s interpersonal skills.
Ellen has first-hand experience working closely with the team and their mentees. In the 18 months that she has worked with them, she has seen more children needing to access The Island’s services due to mental ill-health and this is the reason why she is taking on the 10k to raise much-needed funds for the next generation.
Ellen says “As an adolescent, I struggled with my mental wellbeing, however, I had the luxury of being able to access numerous services with no waiting lists. Unfortunately, the services that helped me 15 years ago are no longer available and the waiting list to access similar services today are incredibly long which can be detrimental to a person’s mental wellbeing. The money I raise will go towards guaranteeing mentoring services for a local child struggling with their mental health.”
Ellen is aiming to raise £250 for The Island which will provide over 6 months of mentoring sessions for a local child.
Nigel Poulton, Mentoring Services Manager says “I am delighted that Ellen will be taking on the York 10k to raise funds for our worthy cause. Fundraisers are at the heart of our work and their efforts really make a difference to the lives of local children going through difficulties within their lives. I wish Ellen all the best with her challenge and look forward to seeing her at the finishing line.”
What is the York 10k?
The York 10k is an annual event which takes place on the first Sunday of every August that gives local businesses and individuals the chance to race through the heart of York to raise funds for a charity of their choice.
The race starts and ends at the York Knavesmire and is suitable for all abilities. Whether you wish to run, walk, hope or use a mobility scooter towards the finishing line, there is something for everyone to get involved in.
Although Ellen is not a natural sportswoman, we hope you will join us in wishing her all the best with her York 10k efforts.

Update: We are pleased to announce that Ellen completed her York 10k and raised an incredible £265 in the process. The funds raised mean that six months of mentoring can be afforded to a local child or young person experiencing challenges with their mental wellbeing. To visit Ellen’s JustGiving page, click here.
